Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. -Matthew 6:19-21
Do not worry. Some of you may not know, but I used to worry a lot more when I was in high school (I know, crazy). One kind of weird thing that I worried about was drill team (aka dance). Do I have everything I need in my dance bag? Do I have the right shoes in there? Do I have the right leotard and the right pants? Oh gosh, I’m going to be late. Yeah, it was actually all really dumb stuff, but I was still worrying over it. But God really used Matthew 6:25-34 to speak to me. I felt like He just really calmed me and assured me that He would take care of me and that none of the things I worried about was really important.
This section of Scripture comes right after where Jesus speaks about our treasure. So, I wonder, does worrying about these earthly things indicate that our treasure is on earth, and so also our heart? I think so. Worrying seems to suggest a lack of dependence on God – a lack of faith. And so when we worry about things like money, school, work, or drill team, we place a high importance on those earthly things and we forget to “seek first his kingdom and his righteousness” (v. 33). Seeking his kingdom and righteousness first indicates that our our treasure is in heaven, and so also our heart.
